What we traditionally call “Television” is by far the most powerful communications medium ever devised. The natural qualities of a video program allow a viewer to not only hear the information or entertainment they seek, but to see the people, places, and things behind the story - in motion.
This simple principle which most of us take for granted is responsible for increasing retention in the viewer by over 300% compared to radio or still pictures pasted with text. We all have memories of a children’s show or interesting documentary we saw 20 or more years ago.
Until recently, producers and distributors of programming, as well as the advertisers who make it all possible, have worked to reach the maximum number of potential viewers through a concept called broadcasting. This could be compared to casting a very wide net across the sea, knowing that a certain percentage of the catch will be the most prized variety.
The rapid changes in Internet and computer technology now make possible the addition of what could best be called narrowcasting to the distribution strategy. This is the ability to offer a series directly to those most interested in the subject through one of the several major video “portal” websites already in service on the web. It is of great value, as anyone there is there intentionally, and not just a casual viewer.
World Record Fishing Challenge uses both technologies to reach not only the weary Anglers returning home from work and turning on their TV, but also those with a deeper passion who wish to watch a previous episode again, or learn more about the sponsors and destinations behind the show –all with the click of a mouse.
